How does pre-school children learn in New Zealand?
As an early childhood teacher in New Zealand, I have noticed that the learning environment here is quite different compared to Taiwan. What is the difference and which one is better for young children?
From my observation, we are used to lots of learning experiences that present the performance in Taiwan. Teachers tend to provide children resources for them to achieve goals that visible.
However, learning experiences are more process-oriented in New Zealand. According to Te Whāriki, the curriculum for early childhood education, children are encouraged to learn in a play-based environment. And play, is relatively hard to present learning outcomes. How do teacher know if children are learning and how do they support children’s learning?
Through learning with children. Through respecting children. The teachers are able to learn alongside the children. When children express their voice and the teacher respond, the learning starts. They become researchers together and through problem-solving, both children and teacher have the opportunities to deepen their understandings.
I would not say which ways of learning is better. However, I like to learn in a natural and playful way.
